My love hate relationship with immune suppressant medication and the role it’s played in my Crohn’s journey

As I sit in the waiting room of the infusion center, I am struck by how comfortable I’ve become in the waiting room of a doctor’s office, especially this doctor’s office. I’m one of the lucky Crohn’s patients whose doctor runs an infusion center with a nurse for every three patients receiving an infusion. Many have to go to the hospital chemo center and spend the entire day there. Remicade is an immune suppressant medication administered via an I.V. drip. The traditional modern medical community is very comfortable with these immune suppressant medications. Although patients see varying results, I’ve been told again and again, the risks from the medication are…

They thought I had skin cancer when I actually had dermatitis…

A dermatologist thought I had skin cancer but I actually had seborrheic dermatitis. How does a dermatologist confuse skin cancer and dermatitis? I have no idea…This experience still makes me angry when I think about it. I am not a dermatologist but I would think a professional would at least ask a couple more questions before making it seem like life or death and taking a chunk out of the back of my head. It went like this… Me: “I have Crohn’s Disease and since my diagnosis I have been having hair loss.” Dermatologist: “Let me take a look.” She does a pull test and ends up with a couple…

Sore throat? Maybe it’s time to change your air filter.

Okay, so it looks like we were lazy homeowners and just didn’t bother to change the filter but in our defense, we had accidentally installed a closet organizer which blocked the filter. In order to even check the filter we needed to move the closet organizer. And it was a big project. You know how when something is going to take a lot of effort and time, it doesn’t get put to the top of the priority list until the pain is bad enough? This was one of those. Once it started to get cold and we turned on the heat, I started getting a sore throat that just wouldn’t…

Do Blue Light Blocking Glasses Work?

Pretty much every company that makes glasses has jumped on the blue light blocking train. They all claim to reduce eye strain and protect our eyes from staring at screens all day. The products run the gamut from trendy computer glasses with seemingly clear lenses to a yellow tinted lens in the type of frames professional bikers wear that wrap around your face.  I’ve been wearing the clear lens computer glasses from EyeBuyDirect for a couple years and I love them. Personally, I do feel like they reduce eye strain from the computer but I can’t discern whether that’s because the lenses actually work or because the glasses are a…

My New Pillow Pick: The Coop Original

We spend a lot of time with our pillow and for me, a bad pillow pretty much guarantees a bad night’s sleep. I carry a lot of stress in my neck and back and I’ve found my pillow needs have changed over the years. I used to love a memory foam pillow that was molded to be higher where your neck needs to be supported and lower where the head sits but now I find it aggravates my headaches. I’ve also tried a down pillow but those don’t offer enough support for my neck. Hence, it was time to try something new. Why I picked the Coop Original My body has…

The Nasty Sleep Cycle I’m Trying to Break

I’ve never been a good sleeper… I am one of those needs it pitch black, cold with a bunch of warm blankets, a fan for white noise, a good pillow and about an hour to get my “tired eyes” on. Back in college and grad school I was protective over my sleep getting in bed at 9pm with lights out at 10pm and sleeping until 7am. I was one of those weird college students who didn’t mind the 8am class because there was less people and my brain works best between 8am and 1pm.  Post grad school, as I entered the investment business my sleep changed. I would typically arrive…
